Carbon equivalent emissions saved by meat tax: According to the US EPA, total US carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent emissions were 6,821.8 million metric tons (MMT) in 2010. (US EPA, “US Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report,” Inventory of US Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990–2010 (2012). Researchers estimate that 51% of emissions of CO2 equivalents is attributable to animal agriculture, which represents 3,479.1 MMT of the US total. (Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang, “Livestock and Climate Change: What if the Key Actors in Climate Change Are . . . Cows, Pigs and Chickens?” World Watch (November/December 2009.) The 44.1% of this figure that the tax proposal would eliminate is 1,534 MMT, or 3.4 trillion pounds of CO2 equivalents. That is more than the 1,497 MMT that the US EPA estimates was emitted in 2010 by all US motor vehicles and vessels.     Great post! In terms of relative subsidies it would be interesting to deconstruct the Economist’s “Big Mac Index” comparing relative purchasing power parities among currencies of the world by subtracting out the % each Big Mac is subsidized in each country. In fact, one can argue that the commodified Big Mac Index itself is a dodgy measure of PPP due to high subsidies. Maybe then we can craft a subsidy index and ask that all such subsidies be made illegal in order to conform with the original GATT principles

      Good idea John – would be cool to see a Big Mac Index that is net of subsidies. Maybe someone with some time on their hands can do this. ;)

Tying all dietary consumption choices to PPP and then made available online in accessible language would be a valuable tool for those of us who are shouting against the wind, a wind created by economic systems and their ability to mask the “true costs” carried on the backs of ecosystems.

  3. This is the book Michael Pollan should have written instead of “Omnivore’s Dilemma”—an entirely misleading representation of fundamental biology. He tries to call “organic, industrial, and hunter-gatherer” food chains. No wonder his conclusions about food choices have nothing to do with ecosystems. His advice in that book is still creating injustices for the impoverished half of humanity (livestock competing for the price of grains and the GHGs animal ag adds to global warming/climate change as starters) and individuals from other species. Looking to get it now. Meanwhile, congratulations on getting this information to us.

      So true about Pollan. He also creates the misleading impression that hunting and eco-rotation are statistically significant in the U.S., which they’re not. It’s virtually all factory farms.
